Academic requirements

First-year students must:

  • Have a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) (a "B" or better where "A"=4.00) from a secondary school. Some ASU programs may have higher admission or English proficiency requirements and may consider a minimum ACT or SAT score.
  • Must have three years of high school coursework. (If you are currently in high school, ASU needs to see 9–11 grade coursework. If you have completed high school, ASU needs to see 10–12 grade coursework.)
  • Must have and present a completed high school diploma or certificate.

Conditional admission

ASU may offer conditional undergraduate admission to international applicants to an on-campus program who meet the academic (aptitude) requirements but who are not proficient in English. This offer of conditional admission will give you time to improve your English proficiency before you start classes at ASU. Your conditional admission offer is good for up to three semesters, during which time you must meet one of these requirements to begin your ASU experience.

Competency requirements

International students who completed high school outside the U.S. are required to meet the following competency requirements:

  • Math: four years (algebra I, geometry, algebra II and one course requiring algebra II as a prerequisite).
  • Laboratory science: three years total (one year each from any of the following areas are accepted: biology, chemistry, earth science, integrated sciences and physics).

Provide evidence of English language proficiency (TOEFL 61)

Additional requirements:

The ASU Sync option is available only to transfer students residing in Arizona because of state regulations and student teaching placement requirements. Students should have completed an associate degree by the time they are enrolled at ASU. Students on I-20 visas are not allowed to complete courses via Sync.

Format option

This program is also offered via ASU Sync. ASU Sync enables students to attend live classes remotely via Zoom. Classes are designed to foster active collaboration and discussion in real time with faculty and peers. ASU Sync students must reside in Arizona throughout the duration of the program. Students on I-20 visas are not permitted to complete courses via Sync and should speak with an advisor about other options to complete this program.

The Bachelor of Arts in Education program in secondary education via ASU Sync is available for transfer students who reside in Arizona.

Students should speak to an advisor about the content areas and modalities offered at our campuses in and outside Maricopa County.

Program description

The BAE program in secondary education prepares students to educate learners in grades 6-12 in the content area of the student's choice.

Students develop strong content knowledge, instructional competency and professional skills needed to lead successful classrooms in middle and high schools. This program provides students with extensive experience in integrating educational technology and has a strong focus on teaching and learning practices that foster equitable access and outcomes for diverse secondary populations. Students select one content area as their subject emphasis, in which they will take at least 24 credit hours. Content areas, which may vary depending on location, include biology, business, chemistry, earth and space sciences, economics, English, general science, geography, health, history, mathematics, physics, physical education, political science and American government, and some foreign languages.

Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College has developed a team-based approach to teacher preparation, allowing students to participate in professional experiences (internships and teaching residencies) with a team of peers while receiving guidance and support from ASU faculty members and highly qualified certified teachers. Students complete a series of internships before a semester-long full-time teaching residency. Team-based professional experiences are designed to prepare students to work with mutually supportive colleagues to address the academic and social-emotional needs of learners. The primary goal of professional experiences is to provide students with multiple opportunities to apply knowledge learned in coursework to practice in the classroom.

Graduates can earn an institutional recommendation from ASU for the Arizona teaching credential in Secondary Education, 6-12, from the Arizona Department of Education.

Concurrent program options

Students pursuing concurrent degrees (also known as a “double major”) earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. Working with their academic advisors, students can create their own concurrent degree combination. Some combinations are not possible due to high levels of overlap in curriculum.

Global experience 

Because of climate change, geopolitical instability or economic factors, the United Nations and other institutions predict that migration will increase globally for the foreseeable future. Learners will migrate to new communities. Increasingly, educators will be asked to meet the needs of students who speak languages other than English and who bring a variety of cultures into classrooms and learning environments. Education students participating in study abroad can prepare for this reality. By engaging in Global Education programs, they can expand their notion of normal schooling and deepen their understanding of how to foster inclusive and inspiring learning environments.

Career opportunities

Graduates from the secondary education program are recommended for certification in an approved area for grades 6-12. The demand for well-prepared secondary teachers is strong, particularly in the areas of math and science. Job opportunities in a fast-growing state such as Arizona are numerous. Graduates with a degree in secondary education work in:
